Morsels of Might: How a Caring Community Kept a Mother and Daughter Together During Cancer Treatment

Two weeks after Alex attended a Culinary Care event, her world was flipped upside down. That’s when she found out her mom’s cancer had returned.

Alex’s mom had battled cancer before, but this time, it felt different.

With the return of her mom's cancer, the fear, uncertainty, and long hours at the hospital returned, too.

As they sat in the hospital room together, a familiar hunger began to creep in. Alex knew that the hospital didn't provide any meals and that she'd have to choose between leaving her mom's side or skipping lunch for the day.

But, this time was different, because her mom had meals from Culinary Care on the way!

“I hoped I’d never be on the receiving end of Culinary Care’s work, but then we found out my mom’s cancer came back. I went to chemo with her and, when I offered to go get us food, she smiled and said, ‘I already ordered Culinary Care!’” ~ Alex

Those words filled Alex’s heart. It wasn’t just about the food—it was about what the meal represented. In that moment, she didn’t have to leave her mom’s side, and they didn’t have to settle for whatever vending machine snacks were available. Instead, they had something to look forward to, something that brought comfort in the midst of chaos.

Thanks to Culinary Care’s amazing community of supporters, Alex and her mom were able to enjoy a delicious meal from a top Chicago restaurant, delivered right to the hospital during treatment.

"It felt like an escape from the hospital and gave us something to enjoy during such a difficult time. And, it meant I didn’t need to leave her side!" ~ Alex

For Alex, this moment became a turning point. The simple act of sharing a meal brought her and her mom a much-needed break from the heavy reality they were facing. It wasn’t just about nourishment—it was about connection. Those meals gave them the chance to sit together and enjoy delicious food during the hardest moments of treatment.

Your kindness made all the difference.

Because of supporters like you, Alex didn’t have to face the difficult choice between staying by her mom’s side or searching for something to eat. And the impact of that generosity? It stayed with her. Now, Alex honors her mom by giving back. She joined The Line, Culinary Care’s monthly giving community, to make sure that families like hers never have to worry about meals when they’re focusing on their loved one’s recovery.

“Every family needs a little Culinary Care when they’re fighting cancer. That’s why I give monthly!” ~ Alex

Your support provides the strength patients like Alex’s mom need to make it through another day of chemotherapy. Each meal you help provide offers nourishment and something far greater: the gift of hope. Alex and her family will forever remember your kindness!
